Carousel Font Size: Pixel Sizes That Read on a Phone
On a 1080-pixel-wide carousel slide, set body text at 32 to 44 pixels and titles at 46 to 76 pixels. The hook goes from 48 to 112 pixels, larger as the text gets shorter. Those are the ranges Karou’s renderer uses. Think in pixels, not points: the slide is an image, and a phone shows that 1080-pixel image at roughly a third of its width, so 40 pixels on the slide ends up around 15 points on the screen (the exact number depends on the phone). Anything under 32 pixels starts to look like fine print.
Why does carousel text look fine on your laptop and tiny on a phone?
You design the slide at full size, on a big screen, with your face a foot from it. Your reader sees the same slide shrunk to the width of a phone, in a feed, between two other posts.
The cost is quiet: nobody tells you the text was too small. They scroll past, and the carousel gets judged on a slide they couldn’t read.
What font size should a carousel use?
These are the sizes Karou uses on a 1080-pixel-wide slide. Each text field picks a size from a step table by its length: short text gets the big size, long text steps down.
| Text on the slide | Short text | Long text | Karou’s limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hook (first slide title) | 112 px (up to 24 characters) | 48 px (over 140) | 140 characters |
| Slide title | 76 px (up to 30 characters) | 46 px (over 80) | 90 characters |
| Body paragraph | 44 px (up to 120 characters) | 32 px (over 320) | 420 characters |
| List item | 40 px (up to 40 characters) | 32 px (over 70) | 110 characters per item |
| Quote | 72 px (up to 80 characters) | 44 px (over 200) | 240 characters |
| Stat number | 260 px (up to 4 characters) | 110 px (over 12) | 14 characters |
Two things follow from the table:
- The floor is 32 pixels. No text on a Karou slide renders smaller. That is the floor for anything you want read, not skimmed.
- Short text earns big type. A 20-character hook renders at 112 pixels; a 130-character hook drops to 56. If your hook won’t fit big, it is too long, and carousel hook ideas has shorter openings to steal.
The same sizes hold for 4:5 (1080 × 1350), 1:1 (1080 × 1080) and 9:16 (1080 × 1920), because the width is the same in all three and the width is what the phone shrinks.
Should you use points or pixels for carousel text?
Pixels. Points belong to print and to documents. A carousel is a picture 1080 pixels wide, and the only thing that matters is how many of those pixels the letters take up.
This is where people get caught in editors. In Google Slides or PowerPoint, a “24 pt” font looks big on a slide set up in inches, then exports to an image where it ends up tiny. The fix is to set the page size in pixels (1080 wide) and judge the text against that width, or to check the exported image on your phone before posting.
A rough conversion for the phone screen: divide the pixel size by about 2.7. A 44-pixel body becomes about 16 points on a phone, a 32-pixel line about 12. Instagram carousel dimensions covers the frame sizes behind that math.
Does the font itself change the right size?
Yes. Serif display faces look smaller than a sans at the same pixel size, and condensed faces fit more letters on a line. Karou scales each display font by its own factor so a serif title reads as large as an Inter one. If you pick fonts by hand:
- Serif titles: go one step up from the table.
- Condensed faces (Bebas Neue): you can hold the size and fit more words, but keep them for titles; condensed body text tires the eye.
- Weight: a 400-weight body at 32 pixels reads thinner than a 500. Use 500 or more for body text on dark grounds.
Carousel design has the rest of the rules (two fonts at most, one accent color, same margins on every slide).
How do you test font size before you post?
Send the slide to your phone and look at it at arm’s length, the way you hold the phone in the feed:
- Export one slide as a PNG at 1080 wide.
- Open it in your phone’s photo app, not zoomed in.
- Read the body text without moving the phone closer. If you lean in, cut words or go up a size.
- Check the hook in a smaller view: the grid of your photos, where it shows as a small square. If the hook still reads there, it will read in the feed.
On a laptop, the same test is the slide at 33 percent zoom. How much text fits on a carousel slide has the character counts per slide type that keep the text at these sizes.
How do you get the right font size without sizing every slide by hand?
Sizing by hand means picking a size for every text box on every slide, every week. Karou does it for you: you write the slides in Claude or ChatGPT, Karou picks the size from the tables above by the length of each line, and returns the slides as PNGs, a ZIP and a PDF. If a line is too long for its slide, Karou tells the AI which slide and field to cut and by how much, so nothing renders below 32 pixels.
The Free plan gives you 3 carousels a day with a small watermark, so you can test the sizes on your own slides before paying. Pro is $12 a month for your own templates and no watermark.
FAQ
What is the best font size for Instagram carousel text?
For body text on a 1080-pixel-wide slide, 32 to 44 pixels; for titles, 46 to 76 pixels. Use the larger size whenever the text is short enough to take it.
What is the minimum font size for a carousel?
32 pixels on a 1080-wide slide is a safe floor for text you want read. Smaller text shows up on a phone at about 12 points or less, which reads as fine print.
Is the font size different for LinkedIn carousels?
No. LinkedIn carousels are PDF document posts, usually at the same 1080-pixel width, and they are read on phones too. LinkedIn carousel PDF size has the page sizes.
Does a 9:16 slide need bigger text?
Not bigger, since the width is the same 1080 pixels. A 9:16 slide has more height, so it can hold more lines at the same size, but keep TikTok and Reels buttons in mind at the bottom and right edges.
How big should the hook be?
As big as the hook’s length allows: up to 112 pixels for a hook of 24 characters or fewer. If it drops below about 66 pixels, the hook is over 100 characters and probably needs cutting.
