How Many Slides Should an Instagram Carousel Have?

Karou · · 5 min read

An Instagram carousel should have six to ten slides. Instagram allows up to 20, and the limit is not the target: six is the smallest count that lets a hook, a few ideas, a proof and a close each get a slide, and past ten the completion rate drops because the slide counter tells people what they are in for. Here is how to pick a number inside that range and what to do when the content wants more.

What is the maximum number of slides?

Twenty, since Instagram raised the limit from ten in 2024. Reels can also carry up to twenty frames in a photo carousel. The maximum is useful for one format (a photo dump, where each slide is a picture and nobody expects to read) and a trap for every other one.

Why six to ten?

Three reasons, all about how people read a carousel on a phone.

The counter. The dots and the “3/8” label are visible from the first slide. A reader decides whether the carousel is worth the swipes based on that count, and eight swipes is a small ask; sixteen is not.

The argument. A carousel that gets saved is an argument: a hook, a promise, three to six ideas, a proof, a close. That is six to ten slides. Fewer and the ideas crowd a slide; more and the ideas thin out into filler slides that say “and another thing”.

Completion. Saves and shares happen on the last slide. Every extra slide between the hook and the close is a place to lose the reader before they reach the button that matters. The last slide of a carousel only works for people who get there.

  • One idea, well argued. A three-slide carousel (hook, idea, close) reads like a strong single image with a payoff; use it for a quote, a single stat or a short announcement.
  • A comparison of two things. Four slides: hook, A, B, verdict.
  • A story with one beat. Five slides: hook, setup, turn, result, close.

Short carousels still beat single images for one reason: the swipe. A second slide gives the reader something to do, and the swipe counts as engagement.

  • A numbered list where each item is useful on its own. “10 shortcuts” can be twelve slides (hook, ten items, close) because each slide is self-contained and readers skip to the ones they need.
  • A reference people will save and return to. A glossary or a checklist tolerates length because it is not read once; it is consulted.
  • A photo dump. Length is the point.

Even then, consider splitting: “Shortcuts 1 to 5” and “Shortcuts 6 to 10” are two posts, two chances at reach, and two carousels that each finish.

  1. Write the close first. What should the reader do after slide ten? Every slide that does not move toward that leaves.
  2. Merge pairs. Two slides with one sentence each become one slide with two sentences.
  3. Move examples to the caption. The slide carries the idea; the caption carries the example and the detail.
  4. Promote one slide to its own carousel. If slide seven could carry a post by itself, it should.
  5. Drop the “intro” slide. The hook is the intro. A slide that says “In this carousel…” is a slide nobody wanted.

How much goes on each slide?

Fewer slides with more text is not the fix for a long carousel; a slide that needs a paragraph is two slides. On a 1080 by 1350 slide, a title under 90 characters and a body under 400 characters stay readable at phone size. How much text fits on a carousel slide has the full limits, and the Instagram carousel size guide covers the safe zones.

A slide budget by format

Format Slides Structure
Quote or single stat 3 Hook, the thing, close
Comparison 4 to 5 Hook, A, B, (C), verdict
Story 5 to 7 Hook, setup, two or three beats, result, close
How-to 6 to 9 Hook, promise, four to six steps, close
Listicle 7 to 12 Hook, five to ten items, close
Reference up to 15 Hook, items, close; consider splitting

When Claude writes a carousel with Karou, the server instructions ask for exactly this shape: a hook slide first, one idea per slide, a proof slide, a cta slide last, and the create tool accepts up to twenty slides but the examples it is given stay in the six-to-ten range. The structure is in how to make a carousel with Claude.

FAQ

Do more slides mean more reach?

Not by themselves. A carousel that gets finished and saved earns distribution; a long one that gets abandoned on slide four does not.

Does Instagram reshow carousels from a later slide?

It can show the second slide to people who scrolled past the first. That is one more reason for slide two to make sense on its own, and no reason to add slides.

Should LinkedIn carousels have the same count?

Roughly, six to twelve pages. The LinkedIn PDF guide has the details.

No. Hook plus payoff is a complete post. It just has no room for an argument, so use it for a single claim.
